The Devil upright meaning

The Devil is the card of what holds us: desire, habit, attachment, money, pleasure, or a relationship or pattern that's hard to leave. Look closely at the picture and you'll see the chains are loose. The card isn't saying you're trapped forever; it shows how much of the trap is held in place by your own consent.

Upright, it asks you to be honest about what pulls at you and what it costs. Wanting isn't wicked. But know the price, and know where the exit is.

The Devil reversed meaning

Reversed, the chain is coming off. You're seeing a habit or a tie for what it is, and starting to step away.

It can also show a dependency coming to the surface. Seeing it clearly is the first step, and support from other people helps with the rest.

The Devil in love

In love, The Devil points to intense attraction and chemistry, and sometimes to obsession, jealousy, or a relationship that's hard to leave even when it hurts. Reversed, you may be breaking free of an unhealthy pattern.

The Devil at work and with money

At work and with money, it can mean golden handcuffs, debt, or a job you stay in only for the money. Reversed, you're finding the courage to change it.

Is The Devil a yes or no card?

No. No, or yes at a price. Ask what it will cost you before you agree. A single card leans rather than rules: read it with your question, and let a reversed card add friction or delay before you call it a flat no.

The picture on the card

A horned figure with bat wings crouches on a black block, one hand raised. Below, a naked man and woman with small horns and tails are chained to the block, but the chains around their necks are loose enough to lift off.

How Mae and Vera read The Devil

Maevera is one familiar with two souls. Mae is quicker to feel what's possible and what's calling; Vera is quicker to see the evidence, the cost and what needs protecting. Neither is always right. They differ in where they look first, and a reading is what they do together.

Mae
Mae admits the pull is real, whether it's pleasure, owning something or being chosen. She won't call wanting a fall.
Vera
Vera asks the price, the way out, and whether this line is pulling you or binding you, and she admits she can be tempted too.
Together
Together they look straight at the desire, loosen the chain that could always be undone, and only then decide whether to stay.
